Chankoko

An old Nenbutsu dance passed down mainly in Goto City
"Chankoko" is an old Nenbutsu dance passed down mainly in Goto City, and its origins are thought to be from the sound of "chan" representing the bell (kane) and "koko" representing the sound of the drum. Every year, between August 13 and 15 during the Obon festival, you can see the dance at various locations in the city. Dancers wearing short-sleeved undergarments and bare feet, donning flower hats, wearing waist sashes, and embracing drums, dance to the sound of large and small bells (Omogane and Reiko) along with songs, creating an exotic atmosphere reminiscent of southern traditions. This dance is designated as a prefectural intangible folk cultural asset.
