In the Azuchi-Momoyama period over 450 years ago, Hayashi, which was a crucial transportation hub, began to hold a "market" when fishermen and farmers brought together seafood and mountain produce for barter. At its peak, from the late Edo period to the mid-Meiji era, as many as 600 ships converged here, and it was said that the tea market price in Kyushu was determined in Hayashi. Even today, during the tea market season, many outdoor vendors selling not only tea but also a variety of seafood, mountain produce, hardware, seedlings, ceramics, and more create a vibrant atmosphere.
