Setsubun marks the transition from winter to spring, and it is a festival that welcomes the new spring while praying for the removal of calamities and the invitation of good fortune. At the shrine, the ritual of "Tsuina Hoshashiki" (the ceremonial shooting to drive away evil spirits) is performed. Tsuina is a ceremony to drive away evil demons, and the "Hōsha no Gi," which involves shooting a large bow modeled after an ogre, is solemnly conducted in front of many worshippers.
