Nakata Planting at Chikatsu Shrine

Traditional performance for praying for a good harvest
The Nakata Planting is a rice planting festival held at the Chikatsu Shrine every year on the day of the summer solstice. The festival begins with a purification ritual, offering of prayers, dedication of sacred tree branches, and the presentation of rice planting songs at the shrine. After the divine rituals, the rice planting ceremony begins. A sacred rice field is marked with a straw rope, and after the purification by the festival leader (shrine priest), rice planting is performed by more than ten young women while the rice planting songs are sung accompanied by the sounds of drums, flutes, and other instruments.
