Toyohashi Gion Festival

Festival at the birthplace of hand-held fireworks
The Yoshida Shrine ceremony held every year on the third Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of July. It is famous as the birthplace of hand-held fireworks, and a monument has also been established in the precincts. Approximately 300 hand-held fireworks are dedicated in the shrine grounds, and about 12,000 aerial fireworks are launched by the Toyokawa river. The magnificent fireworks that color the night sky are said to be the best way to blow away the evil spirits lurking in the heavens. It is one of the three major festivals in Toyohashi and is cherished as a summer tradition. ■Notes Both the hand-held fireworks on the 18th and the aerial fireworks on the 19th will proceed rain or shine.
