New Kyoto Studies Course "Walking the Unevenness of the Outer Moat: North Kyoto Edition"

A talk about Kyoto's "Outer Moat" by Hideyuki Umebayashi!
The Outer Moat refers to the outer structure surrounding Kyoto, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Its scale encompasses about 22.5 km, massive enough to include the area outside the city of early modern Kyoto. What purposes did Hideyoshi have in mind when conceptualizing the Outer Moat at the dawn of a new era? Through the remnants that still exist along the old villages and roads in North Kyoto, we will re-examine the historical significance of the Outer Moat. The lecturer is Hideyuki Umebayashi, a highly popular walking guide and active in the media (Visiting Professor at Kyoto Notre Dame Women's University).
