Kebesu Festival

A unique festival that scatters sparks of fire
The Kebesu Festival is an evening festival of the great autumn festival at Kushita Shrine. The origins and history are unknown. In the dim twilight, figures in white garments, who have purified themselves at the sea, gather in the shrine grounds, and strange Kebesu join the procession. When the stacked ferns are ignited, the procession becomes chaotic, and the dancing Kebesu repeatedly try to charge into the fire protected by the purifiers. When Kebesu thrusts a stick into the fire and scatters sparks, the festival reaches its peak. It is said that bathing in the sparks thrown by the purifiers brings good health and safety.
