Ayabe Hachiman Shrine Flag Ceremony

Solemn Traditional Shinto Ritual
On July 15th, during the flag-raising ceremony, a flag displayed on the sacred tree (ginkgo tree) in the shrine grounds is lowered the day after the Autumn Equinox by men in traditional attire. Based on how the lowered flag flutters and the way the characters written on the flag blur, the chief priest predicts incoming storms and the fortune of agricultural products, and the results are reported to tourists and worshippers. Additionally, the bamboo branches that held the flags are believed to bring prosperity in business and safety at home, leading many people to take them home.
