Nishidaiji Ochasōmuri Ceremony

A religious tea ceremony embodying the principle of "harmony of flavors"
This tea ceremony originated in the Kamakura period when Eison Shonin offered leftover tea to the public as a thank you for the revival of Nishidaiji at Yahata Shrine. It was established as a practice of 'not drinking alcohol', substituting tea for a drinking party, and as part of 'public welfare', providing tea, which was considered an expensive medicine at the time, to the people. For nearly 800 years, it has been passed down through this dual significance of medical and welfare practice. In modern times, monks prepare tea in a large tea bowl with a diameter of over 30 cm and serve it to participants.
