The Himeji Yukata Festival is said to have started in May of the second year of Kanpō (1742) during the annual festival of Nagakabe Shrine. Because those who served at the festival were in such a hurry that they had no time to make formal attire, they wore yukata. Since then, every year, visitors have followed suit and worn yukata, eventually leading to the event being called the 'Yukata Festival.' It is cherished by citizens as a symbol of early summer in Himeji.
