Sugiya Summer Festival (Karei Dance)

Performance of the Intangible Cultural Asset Karei Dance
The Karei Dance, designated as the first intangible cultural asset of Komono-cho, will be performed during the Sugiya Summer Festival. The Karei Dance, also known as Taiko Dance or Rain Prayer Dance, has been passed down as a rain prayer ritual in the water-scarce areas of the rice fields at the foot of the Suzuka Mountains. It involves beating traditional drums in time with the song to drive away evil spirits, summon divine spirits, and call for rainwater using conch shells.
