Niwaka Festival

A magnificent festival of Kiriko with a distinctive shape
A fishing festival that has been handed down in Uwaga for many years. The men of the two fishing nets of Uwaga, the lower net (Umise Group) and the upper net (Baba Group), prayed for a bountiful catch and maritime safety at Umise Shrine, which enshrines the sea goddess Ichikishimahime (Benzaiten), as a result of the poor catch and maritime accidents. They painted valiant warriors on lanterns and energetically carried them to comfort the shrine. Since then, the custom of decorating each boat and altar with the offerings and warrior paintings used in the festival as talismans for bountiful catches has been passed down for about 400 years.
