Nishi Park is the oldest park in the city, opened in the 8th year of the Meiji era. It is renowned as a cherry blossom spot, with many attractions including a steam locomotive, a kokeshi doll tower, a basho haiku stone monument, sculptures of famous authors, and the Galyou plum tree said to have been brought back from Korea by Date Masamune. During the cherry blossom season, the night sakura illuminated by lanterns is very beautiful, and one of the ways to enjoy this park is to leisurely admire the scenery while eating zunda mochi and goma mochi from the tea houses in the park.
