Sumiyoshi Taisha Rice Planting Ritual

One of Japan's three major rice planting rituals
With the beginning of rice cultivation, the rice planting ritual to worship the god of rice paddy is held in various places across the country. Notably, at Sumiyoshi Taisha, the ceremony is conducted without abbreviation, preserving the same formalities as in ancient times, and is known for being splendid and grand, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. During the planting of rice, music is played, songs are sung, and dances and performances are staged to enhance the power of the grains that reside in the paddies and seedling transplants. It is solemnly conducted as a ritual to ensure a bountiful harvest, welcoming the autumn when the rice ears are fully ripe.
