Toyonematsuri (Tagata Shrine)

A rare festival attracting visitors from around the world
Toyonematsuri is a unique festival held every year where a giant male symbol called "Oowase-gata" is made from fresh cedar wood. A local man who is 42 years old and considered to be in a year of bad luck carries it on a float to offer to the gods, praying for a bountiful year ahead. On the day of Toyonematsuri, not only visitors from all over Japan but also from various countries around the world come to participate, creating a festival known for its smiles that transcend national borders.
