UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: Shinjo Festival

The festival of mountains, floats, and portable shrines that Japan takes pride in
The "Shinjo Festival" has a history of over 260 years. In 2016, it was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage as the 'festival of mountains, floats, and portable shrines'. Splendid and luxurious floats expressing famous scenes from Kabuki and historical stories parade through the city along with festival music. Additionally, a traditional procession of portable shrines featuring a total of 200 people and elegant dances such as the Haginoko and Nitayama Kanoko Dance performed at the ruins of Shinjo Castle unfold like a historical picture scroll reminiscent of the feudal era. ■Notes The floats (yatai) are constructed on the left side of the direction of movement, and from the right side, only the back of the floats can be viewed, so please be careful.
