Aira City Kajiaki Town Spider Battle Tournament

400 years of spider love.
The Spider Battle originated from Shimazu Yoshihiro, who is famous for his breakthrough in the enemy lines at Sekigahara. He participated in the Imjin and Keicho Wars (1592-1598) and gathered female golden orb-weaver spiders to inspire his soldiers. It is now held every year on the third Sunday of June. The 'Spider Battle' is a nationally rare traditional event that has drawn attention from popular bloggers. It has become so ingrained in the community that it is incorporated into local school lessons. On the battle day, the spiders' coliseum is filled with many people!
