Umaburashi

A representative summer festival of Honmoku
"Umaburashi" is a special ritual that takes place together with the annual festival of Honmoku Shrine, the guardian shrine of the Honmoku area. It has been passed down for over 400 years since the 9th year of the Eiroku period (1566) and is currently designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Kanagawa Prefecture and one of the top fifty folk performing arts in Kanagawa. The ritual involves a horse-headed tortoise-shaped figure called "Oma-sama", made of goma (straw), which carries the misfortunes of the entire Honmoku district. It is transported offshore in a wooden ceremonial boat that preserves the style of the Edo period and released, representing the summer festival of Honmoku.
