Nishiki-e, a type of multi-colored woodblock print established in the late Edo period, is famous for actor portraits, beautiful women images, and scenic views. It also served as a media that conveyed societal events and trends. This exhibition focuses on Nishiki-e that became a stronger medium during the late Edo to early Meiji periods, depicting wars and turmoil such as the Boshin War, large earthquakes, epidemics, and the gatherings at temples and shrines that attracted many people, highlighting the historical documentary aspect of these turbulent times.
