Kawagoe Lantern Festival

Colorful lanterns adorn the summer of Kawagoe
Originating in the 3rd year of the Kaei period (1850), in memory of the virtue of the lord of Kawagoe Castle, Matsudaira Yamato no Kami Naotane, a retainer's daughter hung lanterns on the eaves. This became an occasion for the entire town to remember the virtue of Naotane and led to the splendid lantern festival with unique decorations. During the period, lantern decorations will be held, along with events like Oh Touryanse!! KAWAGOE (dancing, performances, etc.), a music contest for traditional Japanese music, and shopping district events.
