Temple of Moss and Hydrangeas

Shingon Buddhism Chizan Sect Kamadazan Iouji

Early Jun~Mid-Jun

Iouji began in the 16th year of Tenpyo (744) when the bodhisattva Gyoki visited this place under the imperial command of Emperor Shomu and built the temple complex. With the desire to "heal the hearts of all who visit Iouji," seasonal flowers are planted throughout the temple grounds. The hydrangea planting started in 1977, and it is a hidden gem for hydrangeas. One plant can produce over 30 flowers, and visitors can enjoy various colors of hydrangeas, including blue, white, and pink.
