The 136th Hoshima Port Festival

A grand festival wishing for safe sailing and a big catch
The summer festival of Hoshima Yasaka Shrine. It is a grand festival where the Taiko floats from the east and west, carried by men, fiercely clash against each other in competition. This festival, held to pray for safe sailing and a big catch, first took place in the 22nd year of the Meiji era, when village systems were established across the country. Together with Miyazaki, Miyakonojo, Nobeoka, and Aburatsu, Hoshima became a town and this celebration began. The portable shrine carrying the deity of Hoshima Yasaka Shrine also parades on the sea, protected by numerous big catch flags, praying for safe sailing and a big catch.
