Chihogawa Lantern Floating Festival

A summer spectacle full of emotion
Since 1914, lantern floating has been held to worship the water god and to commemorate the victims of water disasters, as the area was once troubled by floods. Thousands of lanterns of various sizes are floated down the river after welcoming the deity from Aiso Masahachiman Shrine. The ethereal lights floating on the river surface create a picturesque summer scene full of emotion. Lanterns are floated to honor ancestors and convey gratitude to future generations. The sight is enchanting and a must-see. ■ Note You can purchase lanterns at the venue on the day of the event and float them.
