One of Japan's three great festivals, the "Gion Matsuri." Various festive events take place at Yasaka Shrine and in the central area of Kyoto. The festival begins on the 1st with the Yoshifuiri, continues with the welcoming lanterns on the 10th, the Shinkosai/Yamaboko Junko (Pre-Festival) on the 17th, and ends with the return ceremony/Yamaboko Junko (Post-Festival) and the Hanagasa Junko on the 24th... On the 24th, the return ceremony that begins in the evening features three portable shrines and the Mikoshi and Takaramochi procession heading from Shijo Otabisho to Yasaka Shrine. The sight of men carrying the portable shrines and their spirited procession is a must-see.
