The 'Historical Site of the Moat' sprawling on the west side of the grounds established by Toyotomi Hideyoshi is a place where one can feel the beauty of each season. The maple trees are deep green trees loved by Sugawara no Michizane, with about 350 trees growing naturally in the moat area. Remaining in form for 350 to 400 years, they vividly color the seasons as if to remind us of Sugawara's divine virtues. The contrast between the vermillion Uryūbashi bridge over Kamiyagawa and the fresh green is surreal.
