Tomohiro Nawa, who received an Italian government scholarship to study in Milan upon completing his master's degree at Tokyo University of the Arts, became keenly aware of how deeply influenced he is by his memories and experiences as a person from Tohoku while researching Renaissance art. After returning to Japan, he authored a research paper on oil painting materials and obtained a doctoral degree, then returned to his hometown of Higashine City, Yamagata Prefecture, where he engages in independent activities without belonging to any organization. He continues to create while confronting the question, "What is real for the Japanese?"
