Tamatori Festival

A magnificent festival where young people compete to grab the jewel
A festival that has been passed down for about 400 years, it is a magnificent event where young people form a human pyramid to jump and grab the jewel of happiness suspended from an 8-meter-high yagura set up in the sea in front of the great torii of Itsukushima Shrine. During the Edo period, it was called the Ennen Festival and was held in the shrine's hall of worship. It took on its current form in the early Meiji period and is known as a representative summer festival of Itsukushima Shrine along with the Kangen Festival.
