Yumura Fire Festival

The flames of the torches are waved in prayer
The Haruka River flows through Yumura Onsen town. Children surround both banks, waving torches (currently torch poles) in time with the chant, "Jironbo, Taronbo, Kuronbo in the wheat." The fire taken from the goma (a type of fire ritual) lit at a nearby temple is waved while praying to burn away the excited heart and mental illnesses, letting them flow away into the water and cleanse the heart... Torch poles are prepared in excess, allowing tourists to participate. On summer nights, the contrast of fire and darkness creates a unique atmosphere.
