Oshima Fire Festival

Wishes embodied in the fire characters that shine in the night sky
The history of the fire festival dates back to 721 AD during the Nara period. It is said to have started when Yoshidayu Munekatsu, the lord of the Oshima district, who was known for his good governance and had the trust of his people, was accused of rebellion and his castle fell. In response, the residents dedicated the characters of '108 torches' to honor the spirit of the lord and to express their wishes. Every year, the local people choose a character related to that year on the day of the festival, and that character appears illuminated against the dark night. A recommended viewing location is the Tomioka Joint Government Building, where you can also see fireworks.
