Yamada Ditch Water Conveyance Type

Japan's oldest operational waterwheel starts operating again this year!
The group of water-lifting devices in Asakura, a summer tradition, will commence operations. A Shinto ritual will be held, after which the sluice gate located underground in the Suijin Shrine will be opened. It takes about 15 minutes for water to reach the waterwheels located approximately 2 km away, allowing them to operate. This group of water-lifting devices is famous as Japan's oldest operational waterwheels, installed about 230 years ago, and can only be seen during the rice planting period. The operating period is from June 17 to early October.
