Fan Throwing

Receive blessings for dispelling illness and warding off evil
During the Kamakura period, the founder of the revival of Touji Temple, Great Compassion Bodhisattva Kakumyo, saw his disciple trying to swat a mosquito that was biting him during meditation. He admonished them, saying, "Giving one's blood is also an act of a bodhisattva." To honor his pure conduct and virtue, a nun from Hokeji offered a heart-shaped fan when the master passed away, suggesting, "At least let me use a fan to drive away the mosquitoes." After the memorial service on the anniversary of his death, several hundred fans are distributed from the reliquary hall.
