Tsutaya Shigeichiro and Edo Culture

Deepen your understanding of Edo period merchant culture
The 2025 NHK Taiga Drama "Berabou - Tsutaya Shigeichiro's Dream Story -" depicts the life of the publisher Tsutaya Shigeichiro, who was active from the mid to late Edo period. In this course, we will read some of the publications that Tsutaya released, introducing works such as Yoshiwara Saibumi, Kyoka books, and theatrical pieces, to deepen our understanding of the culture of the Edo period depicted within.
