There is a legend that Date Masamune, after being defeated in his first battle at Ayugai, hid in the hollow of this cherry tree to escape danger, and later sent retainers to protect it. This "Kusooka Daimeijin Zakura" is one of the largest cherry trees planted in a human settlement in Japan and is designated as a national natural monument.
