Kan'ensai

Majestic and graceful maritime elegance
It is believed to have originated as a ritual conducted to console the gods, modeled after Heike no Kiyomori's 'Kan'en no asobi' in the capital. After the procession ceremony at the main hall of Itsukushima Shrine, the sacred palanquin is moved to a ceremonial boat, and music is played while heading towards the opposite shore at the Michinomiya Shrine. It is counted as one of Japan's three major boat festivals, along with Osaka's 'Tenjin Matsuri' and Matsue's 'Hōran Enya'.
