The cherry blossoms of Yasukuni announce the arrival of spring in Tokyo
The cherry blossoms of Yasukuni are said to have begun with the cherry trees planted in this area of Kudan the year after Yasukuni Shrine was founded as a spirit-receiving shrine (3rd year of Meiji). Currently, about 500 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, mountain cherries, and double-flowered cherries, are in full bloom within the shrine grounds. There is a designated cherry blossom specimen tree by the Tokyo Regional Meteorological Observatory, and it has long been famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot. Night cherry blossom events will be held from March 27 (Thursday) to March 29 (Saturday) from 6 PM to 8 PM; for more details, please refer to the website. ■Notes Night cherry blossom viewing, ritual night cherry blossom Noh, and ritual performances are planned.
