Sumiyoshi Taisha Hōnoichi Festival - Masu no Ichi

The oldest 'market' in Japan and the origin of Osaka as a commercial hub
The Hōnoichi Festival is a special religious event where rice ears grown in the sacred rice fields are harvested and offered to the deities along with the five grains. The 'Hōnoichi' is said to be the first 'market' in our country and the origin of Osaka as a commercial city. It was also called 'Masu no Ichi' because the most important measuring cups (masu) for trade were sold here, and markets are still held today. Matsuo Bashō also wrote, 'Purchasing masu, the moon-viewing changes with the seasons,' and his haiku stone lantern remains in Sumiyoshi Park.
