The Arrival of the Black Ships and Late Edo Japan & the International Community

Considering the relationship between the arrival of the Black Ships, Japan, and the international community.
The Black Ship fleet, did it really shock Japan? What truly surprised Japan? How did Japan respond to those shocks? How were other Eastern societies affected? This course will discuss these themes from the perspectives of researchers in Japanese history and Eastern history. Furthermore, the final day aims to create a two-way chemical reaction through dialogue and Q&A with the students.
