Enoshima Tenno Festival

Enoshima's unique summer festival held at two shrines
The annual festival of Yasaka Shrine located within Enoshima Shrine grounds. This festival is held over several days in July and culminates in the 'Shinto procession' where the deity departs to Koshigoe, which has strong ties to the deity. After the portable shrine is paraded across the sea, it meets with the portable shrine of Koyurugi Shrine on the opposite shore. The sight of the two portable shrines engaging in a fierce struggle is truly impressive. This unique summer festival of Enoshima serves to ward off summer epidemics and calamities, and it incorporates legends of the ocean deity. It has been selected as one of the top 50 festivals of Kanagawa, embodying the early summer cultural spirit of Shonan.
