After the end of the war, Masashi Ishimoto (1920-2015) began to walk his path as a professional painter. A time when overseas culture flooded into Japan and the Japanese art world was entering a period of transformation. Young Ishimoto searched for his own style of Nihonga (Japanese painting) and created new works one after another, inspired by the Romanesque art he admired in art books. With that longing in his heart, he became known as the "Maiko's Painter." This exhibition will trace the changes in his painting style from his 30s, drawing inspiration from Romanesque art until he became known as the "Maiko's Painter."
