In Hiroshima, a lantern floating event led by citizens has been held every year on August 6 since 1947. It is said to have started when lanterns inscribed with the names of those who died in the atomic bombing were floated down the river. The project "Messages Encapsulated in Lanterns" began in 2015, marking 70 years after the war.
