The summer festival began in 1947 as an event to comfort the spirits of war dead. It has become a beloved summer tradition in Tokyo, attracting many worshippers each year. More than 30,000 lanterns are displayed in a variety of sizes, beautifully illuminating the night sky of Kudans. During the event period, various cultural performances such as floats from Aomori Nebuta and brass band parades are held. Worshippers can visit the courtyard, the closest sacred area to the main shrine, through 'evening courtyard worship.' Food trucks will be present in the outer garden. ■ Note Lighting will be available until 9:30 PM. Alcohol consumption in the shrine precincts is prohibited.
