Todai-ji Lantern Offering Ceremony

Offering lanterns to the Great Buddha and praying for the spirits of the deceased
At Todai-ji Daibutsuden, on the final day of the Obon Festival, the night of August 15, many lanterns will be offered to the Great Buddha during the Lantern Offering Ceremony. This event was initiated in 1985 to allow those who cannot return home during Obon to pay respects to their ancestors. Visitors can enjoy the ethereal atmosphere created by about 2500 lanterns lit along the approach. Additionally, the viewing window in front of the Daibutsuden will open, allowing worshippers to see the face of the Great Buddha illuminated by the lantern light from the approach.
