Ozu Shrine Long Sword Dance

Procession like a scroll of peace
This dance is dedicated during the annual festival of Ozu Shrine, recognized as an important intangible folk cultural asset of the country. Amid lively cheers, boys from young children to young adults elegantly parade while wielding wooden long swords and sasara (a traditional dance implement). Children wearing flower hats and three large mikoshi (portable shrines), along with two children’s mikoshi, make a round trip to Ozu Wakamiya Shrine, located about 1 kilometer away. The procession, resembling a brilliant scroll, attracts many spectators and amateur photographers lining the streets.
