Okage Festival

A summer tradition of the Miyakonojo Basin
The Okage Festival is held in conjunction with the June lanterns of Kamikasumi Shrine, which is said to be the central guardian of Miyakonojo. During the evening festival on the 8th, a "Lantern Offering Festival" is held where several large lantern floats with lights are pulled from Yasaka Shrine to Kamikasumi Shrine. On the main festival day of the 9th, four mikoshi (portable shrines) will parade through the streets in front of the station, led by flutes and drums, in a spirited procession. Both days are bustling with many people.
