Chiryu Festival (Ma Festival)

A grand seasonal event to decorate early summer
The "Chiryu Festival", a shrine festival of Chiryu Shrine, is a grand seasonal event that decorates early summer, held every other year with the main festival and Ma Festival occurring on May 2nd and 3rd. The history of the festival is long, dating back to the Edo period (1653 - "Nakamachi Festival Ledger"), and it is characterized by performances of bunraku and karakuri puppet theater on top of the float. In the main festival, five floats, each 7m tall and weighing 5 tons, are paraded from five towns. The procession, following the music known as kami mai, is truly magnificent as it moves along, almost pressing against the eaves of houses.
