Shana-dō Minami Shyamon Sumo Tournament

Gathering of Strong Individuals!
A traditional event held every year on the 26th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar. Strong individuals from all over the island gather to participate in Okinawan sumo (Okinawa-zumō). Kumejima is known for its active Okinawan sumo, hosting the island-wide tournament five times a year. Unlike Japanese sumo, Okinawan sumo starts from a stance where both opponents grip each other, and the winner is determined by knocking the opponent down and having their back touch the ground. The powerful matches of the male competitors are truly impressive.
