Ishitori Festival

The loudest festival in Japan
It is said to have begun when stones were transported from Machiya River for the repair of the Yabusame shrine at Kasuga Shrine, and it is held on the first Sunday of August and the day before every year. At midnight on the trial day, the sound of gongs and drums from over thirty festival floats resonates, creating an unparalleled sound that blows everything away. The splendid and luxurious procession through the former Tokaido is worth seeing. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage registered.
