Tajima Kutani Iris Tug-of-War

Praying for abundant harvest, health, and prosperity
The traditional event of Tango no Sekku, which has been passed down since the Edo period, is the iris tug-of-war. Participants are divided into an "adult group" and a "children's group" and compete by pulling a rope woven with irises, mugwort, and cattails seven times. It is said that if the adult group wins the final bout, the "final rope" (Osamezuna), it will result in a good harvest, and the event is held every year on the night of June 5 to pray for the development of the region. Due to the well-preserved form from the Edo period, it was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by the national government in 1989.
