In a valley with many red pines at an altitude of 300m to 400m, honshakunage naturally grows in clusters over about 40,000 square meters. Shakunage is an alpine plant that typically grows at altitudes of 800m to 1000m, making its growth in lowlands, and in clusters, extremely rare; it was designated as a national natural monument in 1931.
