Sumida and Asakusa Collaboration Sumida River Lantern Floating

Sumida and Asakusa Collaboration Sumida River Lantern Floating

The beauty of lanterns drifting on the serene river surface

Sumida River Waterside Terrace & Azumabashi Riverbank

8/16(Sat)

The event began as a memorial service for those who died in the war and in water accidents during the Asakusa Reconstruction Festival in 1946. In the spring of 1966, the tidal embankment was improved, and the lantern floating ceremony was stopped from that year. In 2005, a waterside terrace was developed, and the lantern floating ceremony was revived after 40 years. Each year, 2,000 lanterns are floated not only to honor the deceased but also to allow people to connect with the Sumida River, and attendees can float their own lanterns. In addition to pre-registration, applications are also accepted at the venue on the day of the event.
